Tailgating at Virginia Tech

in Tailgates, Virginia Tech

Right off of Interstate 81, this scenic college town is home to Hokies an enormous drill field and the 2010 ACC football champions. Blacksburg, VA is home to VA Tech and more importantly Hokie football. Here is what to expect on game day in Blacksburg.

When planning your tailgate, the most important thing to do before you arrive is have your menu prepared! You need to know what you will be cooking on gameday and have all of the appropriate prep work done before you arrive. Here is some inspiration for your gameday menu based upon what I saw while tailgating in Blacksburg.

There was no shortage of great food at Virginia Tech. I was able to see a wide variety of great breakfast and lunch dishes. For breakfast I saw..

Plenty of flapjacks and country ham biscuits. With Blacksburg being in southern VA, there was no shortage of delicious southern tailgating fare. Of course there were plenty to burgers and hot dogs on the grills, but some of the more interesting dishes included…

Sweet potato fries…

Bacon wrapped corn, and plenty of…

pulled pork!

On game days outside Lane Stadium, you will find the majority of fans wearing t shirts and jerseys. Orange and maroon are VT’s school colors, so any attire that falls into that color palette is the way to go. Certain games will be either an orange effect (everyone wears orange), a maroon effect (everyone wears maroon), or a white out (everyone wears white). For these specific games, make sure you are wearing the correct color! Here is some of the game day attire that I saw in Blacksburg…

Tailgating at Virginia Tech could be considered your “traditional tailgating” setting. Traditional in the sense that most tailgating takes place in parking lots around the stadium. VT’s campus has a large network of parking lots that serve students and faculty during the school week. On game days, that all changes. These lots are turned into an expansive network of unique tailgatingcommunities each with personalities all their own.

A word of advice, don’t park in these lots over night without a student parking pass. You will get towed. The furthest lots are about a mile from the stadium. Used by commuter students during the week, on game days these lots are filled with students and fans who don’t have tickets with a parking pass. This is a great place to park if you are visiting and don’t have a parking pass. Here are some scenes from inside these lots.

As you move closer to the stadium, there are dozens of smaller lots. Some of the coolest ones are located right across from and around the stadium. There is a complicated points system that determines who gets passes for these lots. I am not sure how it works, all I know is there are some kick ass tailgates there!

Virginia Tech’s RV scene is located right outside the stadium.

The vast majority of VT tailgating takes place in this expansive network or parking lots, but there are also quite a few fans that congregate in grassy yards and fields that are tucked away from the stadium and hidden from street view.

There are a variety of places to park and tailgate in Blacksburg, but my recommendation is to start in the commuter lots and enjoy the mile or so walk through Virginia Tech’s scenic campus to the stadium.

With tailgating at Virginia Tech occurring on campus, it is a treat to just walk around and admire Tech’s beautiful campus. If you are an architecture and history buff, you will fall in love with the Gothic stone buildings and the drill field at the center of campus.

Inside the stadium, the Hokie’s entrance to “Enter Sandman” is one of the most electrifying in the country!

Hokie fan’s love this entrance! Because of this, most of the tailgates were shut down just prior to kick off so that fans could fill the stadium to watch their team enter.

With VT’s network of parking lots covering their beautiful campus, tailgating in Blacksburg is full of orange, BBQ, maroon, and hokie calls! Combine these with beautiful fall weather and you can’t go wrong!

Before you visit to Blacksburg, make sure to check out the tailgating resources page for up to date information on the school’s parking and tailgating policies.
